Antes de acertar o retorno ao Santos, Philippe Coutinho chegou a cogitar uma despedida do Vasco. A informação é do colunista Diogo Dantas, de O Globo. O jogador, que deixou o Cruz-Maltino no início de 2026, não voltou a ser procurado pelo clube durante o período em que avaliava os próximos passos da carreira.
A ausência de contato aumentou a frustração do meia de 34 anos após uma passagem marcada por episódios que o incomodaram. Mesmo assim, Coutinho manteve o vínculo afetivo com o Vasco e continuou se considerando torcedor do clube.

Depois de decidir interromper temporariamente a carreira em fevereiro para cuidar da saúde mental, o jogador passou os meses seguintes avaliando o futuro. Durante esse período, recebeu ofertas e sondagens de outros clubes brasileiros.
O Vasco, no entanto, não voltou a procurá-lo. Segundo Diogo Dantas, pessoas próximas ao atleta chegaram a considerar possível uma despedida no clube, mas a falta de iniciativa do Cruz-Maltino contribuiu para que essa possibilidade não avançasse.
Coutinho havia retornado ao Vasco em 2024, clube em que foi revelado e pelo qual sempre demonstrou identificação. A saída, porém, aconteceu em meio a um período conturbado, que deixou o jogador frustrado com algumas situações vividas durante a passagem.
Apesar das alternativas que surgiram no futebol brasileiro, Coutinho acabou aceitando o convite do Santos. A amizade com Neymar teve papel decisivo para o retorno aos gramados ainda em 2026. Os dois construíram uma relação desde as categorias de base da Seleção Brasileira e voltaram a se encontrar no clube paulista.

Coutinho foi apresentado pelo Santos com contrato até o fim da temporada. A escolha aconteceu depois de meses em que o meia avaliou diferentes possibilidades para continuar a carreira. No processo, uma eventual despedida do Vasco permaneceu entre as opções consideradas pelo jogador.
